One man believes good journalism will never die, but it might have to evolve to survive.
Despite a steady decline in circulation, budget cuts and newsrooms with shrinking staffs, the need for classically-trained journalists will endure, said Gary Graham, the executive director for the Spokesman-Review.
"I can't imagine a country like ours functioning ... without the work journalists do," Graham said.
In a world where bloggers have the ability to disseminate information as well as a newspaper, Graham said the need for competent journalists remains. In spite of the proliferation of blogging, good journalistic practice is still important, he said.
"What we do matters every day," Graham said. "What journalists do every day around the country matters."
Graham believes papers will continue to shrink, but will never be completely phased out. There are certain things online media can't accomplish that print can, and visa versa, he said.
Although the type of media may ebb and flow, the need for quality reporting remains constant, Graham said.
His advice to burgeoning reporters faced with an ever-changing industry - don't get lazy.
"Don't get too comfortable, most good reporters wear off the weathering on the bottom of their shoes."
